The Clarinet's Distinctive Tone

The clarinet is a single-reed woodwind with a cylindrical bore. Unlike a saxophone (conical bore) or flute (open pipe), the cylindrical bore of a clarinet produces only odd harmonics of the fundamental — giving it that unmistakable warm, hollow, woody tone. Our virtual clarinet replicates this with a square-wave oscillator (rich in odd harmonics) routed through a lowpass biquad filter tuned to roughly 4× the fundamental, softening the harsh upper harmonics into a mellow reed tone.

Transposition Note

The standard Bb clarinet is a transposing instrument — written C sounds as Bb one whole tone lower. Our online version is non-transposing for educational simplicity (notes sound at written pitch). When writing for a real clarinetist, transpose up a major second. Use our chord transposer to handle this automatically.
