How the Virtual Electric Guitar Works

The virtual electric guitar uses a sawtooth oscillator routed through a Web Audio WaveShaper with a tanh curve at 4× drive. This soft-clipping waveshaping is what tube amps do naturally — clipping the top and bottom of the sine wave to produce those sweet, harmonic-rich harmonics we recognize as electric guitar sustain and overdrive.

Standard Tuning: E A D G B e

Just like an acoustic guitar, our virtual electric uses standard tuning E-A-D-G-B-e from low to high. The low E is 82.41 Hz and the high e is 329.63 Hz — spanning 2 octaves across the strings. Common rock chord shapes are also bound to one-click pads.

Solid-Body Pickup + Tube Amp Simulation

Real electric guitars (Stratocaster, Telecaster, Les Paul, SG) have magnetic pickups that convert string vibrations into an electrical signal, then amplified by a tube amp. Our virtual approximates a humbucker bridge pickup through mild tube distortion — the iconic tone for rock, blues, and country lead lines. Adjust the volume slider for softer clean tones; future updates will add selectable pickup models and pedal effects.

Conseils Pro

Technique & Ergonomie

  • Lightly rest palm edge near bridge for tight palm-muted rhythm riffs.
  • Keep vibrato even and rhythmic.
  • Use neck pickup for warm solo tones.

Erreurs Courantes

Pièges à Éviter pour Débutants

  • Over-gaining distortion causing loss of chord clarity.
  • Fretting with flat fingers causing accidental string muting.
  • Ignoring string damping on high gain settings.

Mobile & Tactile

Commandes Tablette & Smartphone

  • Touch strumming with built-in stompbox toggle controls.
  • Multi-touch 6-string fretboard navigation.
  • Landscape mode recommended for lead playing.

Knowledge Base & FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our browser-based Web Audio engine, instruments, and music theory workspace.

How does the virtual electric guitar work?

Our virtual electric guitar combines Karplus-Strong string synthesis with dynamic overdrive distortion and cabinet speaker simulation.

Click or press keys to play.

What are magnetic pickups and how do they work?

Pickups use magnets wrapped in copper wire to convert vibrating steel string motion into an electrical signal sent to an amplifier.

What is the difference between single-coil and humbucker pickups?

Single-coil pickups offer bright, clear vintage tone but pick up 60Hz electrical hum, while dual-coil humbuckers cancel hum and produce thick, heavy rock tone.

How does palm muting affect electric guitar tone?

Resting the edge of your picking hand on the bridge dampens string sustain, producing tight, punchy low-end chugs used in rock and metal.

What keyboard keys play electric guitar notes?

Keys 1 to 6 pluck open strings, while QWERTY keys fret notes across all 6 strings.

Can I switch between clean and overdrive guitar tones?

Yes, use our onboard controls to toggle distortion gain, filter EQ, and pickup selection.

What are power chords on electric guitar?

Power chords (5th chords) consist of only the root and 5th note, sounding powerful and crisp under high-gain distortion.

How does amplifier distortion work?

Overdriving an amplifier clips the audio waveform, clipping peak tops to generate harmonic distortion and sustain.

Is the virtual electric guitar free for rock practice?

100% free with no downloads required for guitarists, producers, and rock music students.

How does Web Audio model electric guitar amplication?

Our engine uses wave-shaper distortion nodes and lowpass cabinet impulse responses to model tube amp crunch.
