How the Virtual Flute Works

The virtual flute uses a pure sine-wave oscillator with a 50ms smooth attack and an exponential decay envelope — reproducing the breathy, sustained tone characteristic of a real concert flute. While real flutes produce complex harmonic content from physical air column resonance, our synthesized flute captures the essential timbre for melodic practice.

Stage Technique for Wind Practice

Even though you're not blowing air, the flute keyboard layout and short attack help you practice woodwind melodies, sight-reading, and rhythmic phrasing. Pair this with our transposition tool to write flute arrangements in concert pitch (sounding at written pitch — flute is one of few non-transposing woodwinds).

Concert Flute Range

A real concert flute spans from middle C (C4) up through D7 — roughly three octaves. Our virtual flute covers C4-B4 plus two adjacent octaves by octave shift; future versions will include full three-octave flute scripting.
