The C Major Diatonic Harmonica

The diatonic harmonica (or "blues harp") is the world's most-played free reed instrument, with 10 holes containing two brass reeds each — one for blow (exhale) and one for draw (inhale). The C-major harmonica is the standard starting instrument, covering all notes of the C major scale across its middle octave through alternation of blow and draw notes.

Blow Chord vs Draw Fills

When you blow any combination of holes 1-4 simultaneously, you produce a C major chord (C-E-G-C). When you draw, you get D-G-B-D — a G major chord. This clever arrangement is why blues, country, and folk players can play a 12-bar blues (I-IV-V) by alternating between blow (I) and draw (V) positions.

Bending and the Blues Sound

By changing your mouth cavity and air pressure, you can "bend" draw notes flat — this is the signature blues sound. The classic draw bend on hole 3 takes the draw note B down to Bb, A, or even Ab on a real harmonica. Our virtual version plays clean diatonic notes for now; future updates will add bends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our browser-based Web Audio engine, instruments, and music theory workspace.

How does the virtual harmonica work?

Our virtual harmonica uses free-reed square-wave modeling with blow/draw direction switching and subtle tremolo to mimic a diatonic 10-hole harmonica.

Click or press keys to play.

What is the difference between blow notes and draw notes?

Blow notes are produced by exhaling air through a hole, while draw notes are produced by inhaling air through the same hole across a different reed.

What key is a standard 10-hole diatonic harmonica in?

Standard harmonicas are pitched in C major, playing a full C major scale across holes 4 through 7.

What is note bending on harmonica?

Bending is an advanced technique where players constrict their vocal tract while drawing air to pull the reed pitch down by 1 to 3 semitones.

What keyboard keys control harmonica notes?

Keys A through K map to diatonic scale notes, with Shift held down toggling draw notes.

What is 2nd position (Cross Harp) playing?

Cross Harp plays a C harmonica in the key of G, using draw notes and bends to play blues melodies in minor/mixolydian scales.

How do diatonic and chromatic harmonicas differ?

Diatonic harmonicas are tuned to a single key for blues/folk, whereas chromatic harmonicas have a side button slider enabling all 12 semitones.

Can I record harmonica solos online?

Yes, click Record on our transport bar to save your harmonica performance to a downloadable .

webm file.

Is this virtual harmonica free for practice?

100% free for blues enthusiasts, students, and folk musicians without needing any app install.

How does Web Audio model free-reed harmonica tone?

Our engine uses dual square-wave oscillators with subtle detuning and lowpass filtering to replicate brass reed airflow.
