Musical Modes

The seven musical modes are scales built from each degree of the major scale. Where the major and minor scales give you two tonal worlds, modes give you seven — each with its own interval pattern, characteristic color tones, and emotional quality. Modes are the vocabulary of jazz improvisation, the texture of countless film scores, and the source of the bluesy tensions that define rock guitar.

Every mode shares its notes with one parent major scale, but starts on a different degree. C Ionian, D Dorian, E Phrygian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian, and B Locrian all use the same seven white keys — yet each mode sounds distinctly different. The difference comes from which note is treated as the tonal center, which in turn changes which intervals are measured from that root.

What Are the 7 Musical Modes?

The modes are traditionally ordered by their position in the parent major scale (degree 1 through 7), but musicians also order them by brightness — from the most altered-with-sharps (Lydian) to the most altered-with-flats (Locrian). Both orderings are useful, so we'll present both.

  • Ionian (Major scale, degree 1) — The bright, stable foundation. Interval pattern: W-W-H-W-W-W-H.
  • Dorian (Degree 2) — Minor with a raised 6th. Brightest of the minor modes. Pattern: W-H-W-W-W-H-W.
  • Phrygian (Degree 3) — Minor with a flat 2nd. Dark, Spanish/Middle Eastern flavor. Pattern: H-W-W-W-H-W-W.
  • Lydian (Degree 4) — Major with a raised 4th. Dreamy, floating, cinematic. Pattern: W-W-W-H-W-W-H.
  • Mixolydian (Degree 5) — Major with a flat 7th. The dominant/blues-rock mode. Pattern: W-W-H-W-W-H-W.
  • Aeolian (Natural minor, degree 6) — Melancholic, atmospheric. Pattern: W-H-W-W-H-W-W.
  • Locrian (Degree 7) — Diminished, unstable, rarely used as a key. Pattern: H-W-W-H-W-W-W.

The brightness order from brightest to darkest: Lydian → Ionian → Mixolydian → Dorian → Aeolian → Phrygian → Locrian. This sequence differs from the scale-degree numbering above but is how musicians often discuss the modes when comparing their emotional intensity.

Interval Structure of Each Mode

Here is the interval formula of each mode relative to its root, expressed in scale degrees (1 = major scale degree unchanged, b = lowered one semitone, # = raised one semitone). Comparing each mode to Ionian reveals exactly what makes it distinct.

The characteristic tone is the note that distinguishes each mode from its closest neighbors: Dorian's raised 6th, Phrygian's flat 2nd, Lydian's raised 4th, Mixolydian's flat 7th. Emphasizing these tones over their related chords is what makes modal improvisation sound intentional rather than accidental.

How Modes Relate to the Major Scale

The most important conceptual relationship you can learn is the parent scale idea. Every mode is a slice of a major scale. Take the C major scale (C D E F G A B). The seven modes derived from it use exactly these seven notes, but each treats a different note as the root:

  • C Ionian — root C, the parent major scale itself
  • D Dorian — root D, the 2nd degree
  • E Phrygian — root E, the 3rd degree
  • F Lydian — root F, the 4th degree
  • G Mixolydian — root G, the 5th degree
  • A Aeolian — root A, the 6th degree (natural minor)
  • B Locrian — root B, the 7th degree

This is the derivative approach: think "D Dorian = C major starting on D." The opposing parallel approach compares modes that share the same root: C Ionian vs. C Dorian vs. C Phrygian, and so on. Each version reveals a different truth. The derivative approach shows the modes' common DNA; the parallel approach shows what each mode actually sounds like in isolation.

Notice that Aeolian is identical to the natural minor scale. The natural minor scale you learned in the minor scales guide is one of the modes — the sixth. This is why the relative minor of C major is A minor: A Aeolian is the relative minor of C Ionian, derived from the same parent scale.

Common Songs Using Each Mode

Real examples train your ear to recognize each mode's character. The list below is drawn from well-documented analyses — when attribution is debated, we omit the song rather than guess.

  • Ionian — "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and the vast majority of pop and nursery melodies in major keys.
  • Dorian — The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" is the classic textbook example, with its repetitive E minor–C major (i–VII) ostinato keeping the Dorian flavor throughout. So is Miles Davis's "So What" from Kind of Blue, built around Dorian vamps.
  • Phrygian — The Beatles' "Hey Bulldog" leans heavily on the flat-2nd motion. Flamenco palos, root-fifth Spanish guitar sonorities, and metal riffs based on the E-F pull also lean Phrygian.
  • Lydian — The opening brass figure of John Williams's main theme to Star Wars reaches up to the #4. So does the opening of "Maria" from Bernstein's West Side Story.
  • Mixolydian — The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" centers on Mixolydian/modal major voicings. Many Grateful Dead jams and most classic rock dominant-7th vamps rest in this mode.
  • Aeolian — Natural-minor pop songs like Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" and many metal and grunge tracks that never raise the 7th.
  • Locrian — Few songs treat Locrian as a key due to the unstable tonic. Some 20th-century art music and brief jazz improvisational passages use it over half-diminished chords; it appears more as color than as tonal center.

When you listen for these patterns, focus on the characteristic tone: in Dorian songs, listen for the bright major 6th that pulls the otherwise-minor scale upward. In Mixolydian songs, listen for the b7th that keeps the major scale from sounding too resolved. In Lydian, the #4 is the giveaway — a single note that makes everything else float.

How to Practice Modes

Practice modes in two layers. The first is mechanical: play each mode in all 12 keys, ascending and descending, with a metronome. Start by singing or playing the parent major scale, then start from the appropriate degree to feel the mode emerge. The second layer is aural: record a one-chord drone on the mode's tonic (a D Dorian vamp over Dm7, for example) and improvise using the mode's notes. The drone trains your ear to hear the modal center.

Once you're comfortable, practice parallel modes by contrasting C Ionian with C Dorian, C Phrygian, C Lydian, and so on — same root, different key signature.
