Purchasing an 88-key piano involves more than choosing between weighted key actions or wood finishes. Acoustic uprights, grand pianos, and digital stage keyboards occupy significant room real estate and require dedicated operational space for player seating, pedal access, and acoustic soundboard projection.
Calculating the Player Bench Envelope
The physical chassis dimensions (Width × Depth × Height) only represent the instrument itself. To calculate your total room requirement, you must add the Player Seating Envelope—an additional 700mm to 850mm (28 to 33 inches) of depth required behind the keybed for the piano bench, seating position, and leg movement.
Acoustic Projection & Lid Clearances
For grand pianos (like the Steinway Model B), sound emanates upward and outward from the soundboard when the lid is raised at a 45-degree angle. Positioning a grand piano near a wall requires leaving an acoustic projection cone space to prevent muffle and harsh high-frequency reflections.
