Mastering MIDI Drum Programming & Groove Swing
Programming authentic drum grooves requires more than placing notes on a grid. Professional music producers rely on micro-timing offsets, velocity dynamics, and swing factors to make computerized drums sound alive. Standard 16-step sequencers offer a 1/16th note resolution (4 steps per quarter note beat).
The Physics of Groove Swing
Groove swing shifts every odd-numbered 16th note slightly late in time toward the subsequent downbeat. At 0% swing, all 16th notes are mathematical grid points. At 50% swing, the second 16th note is delayed to form a triplet feel. This swing ratio defines the signature bounce in UK Drill, Lo-Fi hip hop, and 90s Chicago House music.
