The Trombone and Its Slide

The trombone (Italian for "large trumpet") is unique in Western orchestral brass — instead of valves, it uses a telescoping slide to change the length of tubing and thus the pitch. The 7 slide positions cover chromatic pitches, with each position accessed by a partial harmonic series from the player's lips.

The Slide Mechanics

From open (1st position, shortest), the player extends the slide farther out for each lower pitch. Position 7 is fully extended; beyond it requires a longer bass trombone. Each position shift moves the open pitch down by approximately a semitone — so positions 1-7 produce the scale from Bb down to E (or unison C down to F on tenor).

Jazz and Orchestral Repertoire

Trombones are essential in orchestral brass sections (Brahms, Mahler, Wagner) and jazz (J.J. Johnson, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Tommy Dorsey). The instrument's glissando capability — sliding directly between notes without intermediate pitches — is signature in both idioms, making the trombone truly "the slide's signature voice."

Effektives Üben

  1. 1 Select slide position 1 through 7.
  2. 2 Adjust lip embouchure tension to select harmonic overtones.
  3. 3 Drag slide continuously for smooth trombone glissando.

Profi-Tipps

Technik & Ergonomie

  • Use wrist and fingers for quick slide movements rather than full arm movement.
  • Support slide weight with left hand.
  • Clean legato tonguing between positions.

Häufige Fehler

Typische Anfängerfehler vermeiden

  • Smearing notes when crisp legato tonguing is required.
  • Misjudging 6th and 7th far slide positions.
  • Bumping mouthpiece against teeth during fast slide changes.

Mobil & Touch

Tablet- & Smartphone-Steuerung

  • Touch slide position strip with physical slide drag animation.
  • F-attachment rotor trigger.

Knowledge Base & FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our browser-based Web Audio engine, instruments, and music theory workspace.

How does the virtual trombone work?

Our virtual tenor trombone uses physical brass modeling with 7 slide position filters to simulate acoustic slide extensions.

Click any chromatic key to play.

Why does the trombone use a slide instead of valves?

The sliding outer tube continuously lengthens the air column, allowing smooth microtonal glissandos and pitch adjustments impossible on valved instruments.

What are the 7 slide positions on a trombone?

Position 1 is fully retracted (open), and each lower position (2 through 7) extends the slide further out, lowering the fundamental pitch by one semitone per position.

Is the tenor trombone pitched in Bb?

Yes, the tenor trombone is pitched in Bb, but in orchestral music it is read at concert pitch in bass clef.

What keyboard keys play trombone notes?

Keys A through K cover a full chromatic octave, corresponding to slide position and lip partial combinations.

What is an F-attachment valve on a trombone?

An F-attachment (trigger) opens extra tubing, allowing cellists/trombonists to play low F2 in 1st position instead of reaching 6th position.

How do lip partials (overtones) work on trombone?

By tightening lip tension (embouchure), trombonists play higher harmonic partials (Bb1, F2, Bb2, D3, F3, Ab3, Bb3) on the same slide position.

Can I record trombone fanfares online?

Yes, click Record on our transport bar to capture audio and download a .

webm file.

Is this online trombone free for brass students?

100% free for brass students, band directors, and arrangers.

How does Web Audio physical modeling synthesize trombone slide tones?

Our engine models lip-reed impulse responses coupled with a dynamic conical bell acoustic radiation filter.
