The Harp's Warm Sustained Tone

The concert harp is the modern pedal harp used in orchestras, with 47 strings spanning nearly 6½ octaves. Each string is color-coded: red for C, blue/black for F, and natural for the rest, helping harpists navigate this wide range visually. Our virtual harp captures a single octave's worth with the triangle-wave + long-decay envelope that characterizes harp's resonant, sustained tone.

Pedals — The Genius of the Pedal Harp

Each concert harp has 7 foot pedals, one per diatonic note (C, D, E, F, G, A, B). Each pedal has 3 positions: flat, natural, sharp. Pressing a pedal simultaneously sharpens (or flattens) all strings of that note across the entire harp — a brilliant mechanical system. Future versions of our virtual harp will emulate these pedal positions in software.

From Ancient Egypt to Modern Orchestra

Harps are among the world's oldest instruments, with early bowed and angular harps from ancient Egypt (~3000 BCE). Today's pedal harp was perfected by Sébastien Érard in the early 1800s, making fully chromatic key signatures available to harpists. The harp remains central to orchestral color and Celtic folk traditions worldwide.

Guide Étape par Étape

Comment Pratiquer Efficacement

  1. 1 Set pedal tuning for desired scale key.
  2. 2 Sweep across string rows for glissando effects.
  3. 3 Pluck with finger pads (no nails).

Conseils Pro

Technique & Ergonomie

  • Use thumbs pointing up and fingers pointing down for proper harp posture.
  • Mute bass strings with palm edge when changing harmony.
  • Gentle finger pad contact produces warm tone.

Erreurs Courantes

Pièges à Éviter pour Débutants

  • Plucking with fingernails causing harsh clicking sound.
  • Glissandoing too fast losing string articulation.
  • Forgetting pedal position changes when modulating key.

Mobile & Tactile

Commandes Tablette & Smartphone

  • Full finger swipe across strings triggers realistic glissando audio.
  • Pedal state indicator lights.
  • Multi-touch finger plucking.

How does the virtual harp work?

Our virtual concert harp uses Karplus-Strong physical modeling with glissando sweep support to recreate the serene, ringing pluck of acoustic harp strings.

Click or press keys to play.

How many strings does a full pedal concert harp have?

A standard orchestral pedal harp has 47 strings, spanning 6½ octaves from C0 (32.

7 Hz) up to G7 (3136 Hz).

Why are harp strings color-coded red and blue/black?

All C strings are colored red and all F strings are colored blue or black, giving harpists visual reference landmarks across 47 strings.

How do foot pedals work on a concert harp?

A concert harp has 7 foot pedals (one for each note name) that adjust string tension to play flat, natural, or sharp notes.

What keyboard keys play harp notes?

Keys A through K trigger individual string plucks, while dragging your mouse across strings triggers a sweeping harp glissando.

What is a harp glissando?

A glissando is a continuous rapid sliding strum across multiple harp strings, creating a lush, cascading acoustic wave.

How do lever harps and pedal harps differ?

Lever harps use hand-operated levers on individual strings for folk music, while pedal harps use 7 foot pedals for chromatic orchestral modulation.

Can I record harp glissandos online?

Yes, use our recording controls to capture audio live into a downloadable .

webm file.

Is this virtual harp free for music practice?

100% free with unlimited browser access for students, composers, and harp enthusiasts.

How does Web Audio physical modeling synthesize harp string plucks?

Our engine models string tension delay loops and wood soundboard decay to produce authentic nylon and gut string resonance.
