Each bar is a 6-face cuboid cast at 3D perspective with a real wood gradient wood gradient and a soft contact shadow. The rail the bar and resonator tubes complete the visual — the closest you'll find to a real xylophone inside a browser.

12-note chromatic layout

Default chromatic layout gives you every note from C4 to B4 — C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B — playable via mouse, touch, or your keyboard. Switch to diatonic for a simpler learning mode.

How the Virtual Xylophone Works

An online xylophone runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API — no downloads, no plugins, no apps to install. Each wooden bar produces a tuned pitch when struck with a mallet, traditionally covering one to two octaves of the chromatic scale. Our version maps 12 chromatic notes (C4-C5) to color-coded 3D bars so beginners can identify pitches visually while learning percussion layout.

Playing Technique

On a real xylophone, you strike the center of each bar with a yarn or rubber mallet for a warm tone, or a plastic mallet for a brighter, sharper attack. Our virtual version reproduces that sharp, percussive envelope: notes snap on instantly with their full volume, then decay exponentially over 350 milliseconds — like real wooden bars vibrating in their resonator tubes.

Configuration Options

The pipe strip above offers three toggle groups: Layout (Chromatic vs Diatonic, an 8-bar C major scale perfect for beginners), Bar Material (Wood / Redwood / Acrylic for visual flavor), and Starting Octave (C4 or C5). All three switch instantly with no audio gap, since the Web Audio engine outputs independent of the 3D rendering layer.

What keyboard keys play which notes?

A-S-D-F-G-H-J-K maps to C major scale (C4-C5).

W-E-T-Y-U plays the chromatic sharps between. Hold longer for sustained tone. Each bar shows its note name right on the front face.

Can I record my xylophone performances?

How does the xylophone synthesis work?

We use a high-quality sine-wave oscillator with a sharp 300ms exponential decay envelope through the Audio Context MediaStream pipeline.

The output is 100% client-side with <5ms latency on modern browsers.

Can I change the starting octave?

Yes, the Configuration panel's Starting Octave toggle lets you shift from C4 (default) to C5 range for a higher register.
