Piano Chords — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our browser-based Web Audio engine, instruments, and music theory workspace.
How is the piano chord directory organized?
Chords are organized by root note (all 12 chromatic pitches from C to B) and harmonic quality (major, minor, 7th, diminished, augmented, and extended).
Select any root and quality to open an interactive 88-key keyboard visualizer.
What are piano chord inversions?
Inversions rearrange the vertical order of notes in a chord.
Root position places the root note as the lowest bass tone, 1st inversion places the 3rd in the bass, and 2nd inversion puts the 5th in the bass. Inversions enable smooth voice-leading without large hand jumps.
Which piano chords should beginners learn first?
Beginners should start with primary major and minor triads: C Major (C–E–G), G Major (G–B–D), F Major (F–A–C), and A Minor (A–C–E).
These four chords alone allow you to play hundreds of popular songs.
Are piano chords the same in all octaves?
Yes.
The harmonic interval formula (root, 3rd, 5th) remains identical across every octave of the piano keyboard. Playing a chord in higher octaves sounds brighter, while lower octaves provide rich bass depth.
Can I listen to piano chords online without a MIDI keyboard?
Yes! Every chord page features built-in Web Audio synthesis with realistic acoustic piano resonance.
You can click to play individual notes, inversions, or the complete harmonic chord instantly.
