What Are Musical Notes?

A musical note is a named pitch — the fundamental building block of all music. Every melody, chord, and harmony you've ever heard is constructed from individual notes played in sequence or simultaneously. Understanding what notes are, how they're named, and how they relate to each other is the first step in learning any instrument or music theory concept.

Note Names: A to G

Western music uses seven letter names for notes: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. After G, the pattern repeats starting again at A, just one octave higher. These are the natural notes — they correspond to the white keys on a piano. On sheet music, they appear on the lines and spaces of the staff.

Between most natural notes there's an additional note called a sharp (raised by one semitone, written as #) or flat (lowered by one semitone, written as b). The complete set of 12 notes per octave is: C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B — then back to C in the next octave. Notice that E to F and B to C are only a semitone apart with no sharp/flat in between.

Sharps, Flats, and Enharmonic Equivalents

A sharp (#) raises a note by one semitone. A flat (b) lowers a note by one semitone. C# is one semitone above C; Db is one semitone below D. Since they refer to the same pitch on a piano, C# and Db are called enharmonic equivalents — same sound, different name depending on context.

Common enharmonic pairs include C#/Db, D#/Eb, F#/Gb, G#/Ab, and A#/Bb. Note also that Cb is the same as B, and E# is the same as F. Key signatures determine which name to use — for example, G major uses F# (not Gb) because the scale must use each letter exactly once.

Octaves and Register

An octave is the distance between one note and the next note of the same name. The frequency doubles with each octave — A4 (440 Hz) to A5 (880 Hz). Our ears perceive notes an octave apart as essentially the same pitch class, just higher or lower. This is why a melody played by a violin and a cello sounds like the same melody despite being in different octaves.

Octaves are numbered to specify exact pitches. On a standard 88-key piano, middle C is C4. Notes below are C3, C2, C1, and down to A0. Notes above go up to C8. The Chromatic Scale

The chromatic scale is simply all 12 notes in order, ascending or descending by semitones. C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C. It's the musical equivalent of every available pitch in Western music. All other scales and modes are subsets of this chromatic palette.

On a piano, notes are laid out linearly from low to high — the white keys are natural notes, the black keys are sharps/flats. On a guitar, notes repeat across six strings; each fret raises the pitch by one semitone. On a bass, the same principle applies with longer strings tuned an octave lower.
