The Marimba, in True 3D

How browser marimba synthesis works and what makes our 3D scene distinct

A virtual marimba recreates the deep, mellow tones of one of the most expressive percussion instruments. Unlike the xylophone's bright, percussive snap, a marimba uses wider bars tuned through arches carved into the underside, with vertical resonator tubes underneath amplifying specific harmonics. The result is a sustained tone — you can hold a note for half a second or more.

Our Synthesis Approach

We use a triangle-wave oscillator with a 600ms exponential decay envelope to mimic the wooden warmth of real rosewood bars. Real marimbas tune both the fundamental and the fourth harmonic by carving the bar's underside; we approximate this timbre by blending the oscillator's natural harmonics into a warm, harmonically rich tone.

Three Material Options

Switch between Redwood (default warm), Wood (brighter), and Acrylic (color-cycled contemporary) using the Material toggle in Configuration. All configurations swap instantly — the visual identity changes while the audio continues uninterrupted.

Latin American Heritage

The modern marimba has roots in Central American folk music, particularly in Guatemala and southern Mexico, where it remains a national symbol. Contemporary 5-octave marimbas are standard in orchestral, solo, and jazz repertoires. Buying a real wooden marimba costs $5,000-$20,000+; doing it online is a free, instrument-free way to learn mallet technique first.

Knowledge Base & FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our browser-based Web Audio engine, instruments, and music theory workspace.

How does the virtual marimba work?

Our virtual marimba uses wooden bar physical modeling with resonator tube resonance filters to produce rich, warm rosewood mallet timbres.

Click or press keys to play.

What material are physical marimba bars made from?

Professional marimbas use Honduras Rosewood or synthetic Padauk wooden bars to generate warm, dark acoustic tones.

What is the function of resonator tubes underneath marimba bars?

Aluminum resonator tubes suspended beneath each bar amplify fundamental pitches and extend acoustic low-end sustain.

What is the difference between a marimba and a xylophone?

Marimbas have wider rosewood bars tuned to fundamental and 4th harmonics for warm sustain, whereas xylophones have narrower bars tuned to 3rd harmonics for dry, piercing attack.

What keyboard keys play marimba notes?

Keys A through K trigger chromatic marimba notes across two octaves.

What is 4-mallet grip technique in marimba playing?

Marimbists hold two mallets in each hand (using Stevens or Burton grip) to play complex 4-note chords and arpeggios simultaneously.

What mallets are best for marimba?

Soft yarn-wrapped mallets are used for rich bass bars, while medium-hard rubber mallets are used for bright upper registers.

Can I record marimba performances online?

Yes, use our built-in recording controls to save your performance as a downloadable .

webm file.

Is this virtual marimba free for percussion practice?

100% free for percussion students, school ensembles, and mallet enthusiasts.

How does Web Audio model rosewood marimba warmth?

Our engine uses lowpass filter envelopes and sub-harmonic sine synthesis to replicate acoustic tube resonance.
